Andrew Gurruwiwi Band

“Utterly extraordinary” – Koori Mail

“Bursts with vibrant rhythms and joyful tunes that celebrate their culture” – Rolling Stone

The Andrew Gurruwiwi Band is an eight-piece Yolŋu funk explosion from Northeast Arnhem Land, led by blind keytar-wielding elder Andrew Gurruwiwi. Fiercely original and impossible to resist, their music — sung in Yolŋu Matha and English - is a fresh blend of funk, rock and reggae that the band simply call Yolŋu Funk.

Their debut album Sing Your Own Song (2024) drew national acclaim, hailed by The Weekend Australian as “a dynamic set based largely on ancient Yolŋu traditions, but one that crackles with modernity.” With infectious grooves and global influences spanning Africa, Jamaica, Mexico and beyond, the record has been championed by Double J, ABC Radio National and community radio across the country.

Onstage, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band are a revelation - joyful, high-energy and utterly dance-inducing. In just two years they’ve ignited crowds at Golden Plains, WOMADelaide, Garma, VIVID Sydney and QPAC’s Clancestry Festival, alongside a support for L.A.B. at Darwin Festival.

Winners of Song of the Year and Best New Talent at the 2025 National Indigenous Music Awards, this is a band rewriting the rules of funk in Australia.
